About Solve Formulas
Solve Formulas is a geometry reference and calculator suite built for students, teachers, and anyone who needs a quick, reliable answer with the working shown. The idea is simple: every formula page pairs a free calculator with a plain-language explanation of why the formula works, not just what it says.
Why we built this
Most students encounter geometry as a list of formulas to memorize. That approach works until an exam changes the wording slightly, and suddenly the memorized formula doesn't seem to fit. The solution isn't to memorize more; it's to understand where the formula comes from.
The distance formula is a good example. On the surface it looks arbitrary: a square root of two squared differences. But it's actually just the Pythagorean theorem drawn on a coordinate grid. Once you see that, the formula stops being something to remember and becomes something you can reconstruct from scratch on any test.
That reasoning applies to every formula on this site. We include a derivation or proof on every page, usually just a few lines, because that's the part most textbooks skip.
Who it's for
We write for high-school and college students working through geometry or algebra II, math teachers looking for a clean reference to share with a class, SAT and ACT test-takers preparing for coordinate geometry questions, and self-learners who want to fill in a gap without sitting through a full course. Whether you need a quick answer or a deeper explanation, the same page serves both.
How content is created
Every formula page on Solve Formulas goes through the same process:
- Draft. A member of the editorial team writes the explanation, worked examples, and proof from scratch, using standard curriculum references as the source of truth.
- Calculator verification. The calculator is tested against multiple worked examples, including edge cases like negative coordinates, fractions, and the origin, to confirm the output matches hand-calculated results.
- Curriculum alignment check. The content is reviewed against Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and College Board SAT Math specifications to make sure coverage is accurate and relevant.
- Review. A second team member reads the page for clarity, accuracy, and completeness before it goes live.
We follow a documented editorial policy that covers how content is created, fact-checked, and updated. If you spot an error or want to suggest a topic, corrections are a priority; use the contact page and we'll get back to you within 24 hours.
What we cover
The site is organized around three areas of geometry:
- Coordinate geometry: the distance formula, midpoint formula, slope, and the equation of a circle. These are the most-tested concepts on the SAT and ACT.
- Plane geometry: area and perimeter of triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, and polygons.
- Solid geometry: volume and surface area of cylinders, spheres, cones, prisms, and pyramids.
We publish new calculators in small batches so every page gets a full write-up, not a thin template. The distance formula page is the most complete starting point if you're new here.
